Description
Omothymus violaceopes – The Azure Titan of the Canopies
In the world of tarantula keeping, there are species that constitute a Holy Grail – creatures whose majesty, size, and coloration define the pinnacle of arachnoculture. Omothymus violaceopes undoubtedly belongs to this elite group. It is one of the largest and most inspiring arboreal giants, combining breathtaking azure coloration with an enigmatic, secretive nature. Its presence in a collection is a testament to the highest level of keeping skill.
WARNING: Species exclusively for advanced keepers. O. violaceopes is an Old World tarantula – it is extremely fast, highly defensive, and possesses potent, medically significant venom. It requires the highest level of experience, respect, and absolute adherence to safety protocols.
Why is Omothymus violaceopes an Exceptional Choice for the Connoisseur?
- Unmatched Beauty: Hypnotic, metallic, royal blue or deep purple legs, contrasting with a golden/olive carapace and a dark abdomen. Complemented by fiery orange bristles on the legs.
- True Arboreal Giant: One of the world's largest arboreal tarantulas, reaching an impressive leg span of 23-25 cm, and even up to 28 cm.
- Fascinating Lifestyle: Although classified as arboreal, it shows strong tendencies to dig (especially when young), building extensive web nests from the substrate level upwards, which is extremely interesting to observe.
- Old World Temperament: Its speed and defensive posture provide a satisfying challenge for the most experienced keeper.
- Systematic Novelty: Transferred from the genus Lampropelma to Omothymus in 2019, making it an interesting acquisition for taxonomy enthusiasts.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
The key to safe keeping is understanding its defensive nature. This is a species intended exclusively for advanced keepers.
- Venom: Potent and medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause severe, long-lasting systemic symptoms, including strong muscle cramps. It demands absolute respect and caution.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast ("lightning-fast") spider. Its primary strategy is to flee to its hideout, but when cornered, it will unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack.
- No Urticating Hairs: As an Old World tarantula, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is a powerful bite.
- Handling: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, in a secure environment, with utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Vertical Kingdom with a Deep Foundation
The key is to understand its hybrid lifestyle. The terrarium must be vertically oriented (min. 30x30x45 cm for an adult) and possess excellent cross-ventilation.
A very thick layer of substrate (minimum 10-15 cm) that retains moisture (a mix of peat, coconut fiber, wood pulp) is essential. This allows young individuals to dig and stabilizes conditions for adults. A large, vertical decor element (cork tube) is equally important, serving as the main hideout.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Rainforest
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-29°C.
- Humidity: High, at 70-85%. It must be maintained through moist substrate and a water dish, while ensuring excellent ventilation to prevent stagnation and mold.
