Description
Neoholothele incei – Miniature Marvel of Terrarium Keeping
Neoholothele incei is a species full of captivating contrasts: a dwarf tarantula with a big personality, whose delicate beauty is matched by lightning-fast speed. This miniature jewel from Trinidad and Venezuela is a dynamic spider, offering unique experiences, including the rare possibility of communal keeping.
Why is Neoholothele incei an Exceptional Choice?
- Gold-Olive Mosaic: Spectacular coloration – a metallic golden carapace contrasting with an olive-black abdomen adorned with a pattern. A stunning recessive 'Gold' morph is also available.
- Dwarf Size: Reaches only 5-9 cm in leg span, ideal for those with limited space, but its activity and speed are impressive.
- Master Web Builder: It is an extremely prolific webber ("heavy webber"). In a short time, it can transform the terrarium into a dense, multi-level network of tunnels, which is fascinating to observe.
- Ideal "Transitional" Species: Its mild venom and small size, combined with extreme speed, make it an excellent species for learning to work with fast spiders, without the medical risk associated with Old World species.
- Communal Potential: One of the few tarantulas that can be successfully kept in groups (provided certain requirements are met), allowing for the observation of unique social behaviors.
Temperament and Safety – Understanding the "Skittish Sprinter"
The character of N. incei is consistently described as skittish, nervous, but not aggressive. Its reactions to threats are almost exclusively flight-based.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. Bites are extremely rare and usually result from keeper error when trying to catch the fleeing spider.
- Urticating Hairs: Reports are contradictory. Some sources state it has them, others that it does not. However, they are not its primary line of defense, and it is not known for flicking them. Caution is advised.
- Speed: This is its main characteristic. It is one of the fastest tarantulas in the hobby. All manipulations in the terrarium require the utmost caution and preparation for sudden bolts.
- Handling: Due to its small size and extreme speed, handling this species is categorically discouraged. A fall from even a small height can be fatal.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – Space for an Active Weaver
For an adult specimen, a small terrestrial terrarium (min. 20x15x10 cm) is sufficient. Good ventilation is essential.
Adequate substrate depth is important (a minimum of 5-8 cm for adults, and for juveniles as much as 2/3 of the container's height), which allows for digging and provides a sense of security.
It is crucial to provide numerous anchor points for the web (bark, branches, artificial plants). A "cluttered" terrarium is a happy terrarium for this species.
Temperature and Humidity – The Key to Success
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C. It tolerates room temperatures.
- Humidity: High, at 70-80%. This species does not tolerate dry conditions well. The substrate should be regularly moistened (preferably using the "damp corner" technique) and a water dish (e.g., a bottle cap) provided.
Feeding – Big Appetite in a Small Body
It is a voracious and bold hunter.
- Juveniles (L1/L2): Require very small food (D. melanogaster fruit flies, pinhead crickets, cut-up mealworms). Feed every 2-3 days.
- Subadults and Adults: Feed every 7 days with appropriately sized insects (crickets, cockroaches).
