Description
Linothele sericata – an unusual arachnid from the Mygalomorphae family
Linothele sericata is a fascinating species originating from South America. Although it belongs to the Mygalomorphae family, it is not classified as a tarantula. Its body grows up to approx. 4 cm in length, and its characteristic features include exceptionally long spinnerets, which enable the creation of intricate and extensive web nests.
Appearance and behavior
- Intensely dark navy-blue legs, a golden carapace, and a reddish-brown abdomen.
- High speed and a tendency towards aggression.
- Potent venom, requiring caution during handling.
- Inability to climb smooth surfaces (e.g., glass, plastic).
Keeping conditions
- Terrarium with minimum dimensions of 30×30×30 cm, with moist substrate (although the species does not dig).
- Temperatures: 27–28°C during the day, slightly lower at night.
- High humidity – regular misting of the substrate (the spider is sensitive to drying out).
- Additions in the form of branches or roots for web attachment.
- Live plants are usually quickly covered with a layer of webbing.
Feeding
Linothele sericata is not picky – it readily attacks any insects that fall into its web. This species grows very quickly, so juvenile specimens require frequent feeding.
Linothele sericata is an unusual arachnid that will delight advanced spider enthusiasts with its impressive, extensive webs and spectacular hunts. However, due to its potent venom and aggressive behavior, keeping it requires experience and caution.
