Description
Lampropelma carpenteri – Giant Tarantula from Sulawesi
Lampropelma carpenteri is a species that rightfully holds a place in the pantheon of the world's largest and most impressive tarantulas. This giant from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, reaching a leg span of 22-25 cm, is a true jewel in the collection of any advanced keeper. Its velvety, charcoal-gray coloration after a molt and powerful build inspire respect and awe.
WARNING: Species exclusively for advanced experts. L. carpenteri is an Old World tarantula, which means no urticating hairs, potent, medically significant venom, and a highly defensive and unpredictable temperament. It requires the highest level of experience, respect, and responsibility.
Why is Lampropelma carpenteri an Exceptional Choice for the Expert?
- A True Giant: One of the largest arboreal tarantulas in the world, whose impressive size becomes the focal point of any advanced collection.
- Velvet Elegance: The deep black or charcoal-gray body, especially intense after a molt, gives it a majestic appearance.
- Fascinating Lifestyle: Although classified as arboreal, it shows strong tendencies to dig and build extensive web nests from the substrate level upwards, which is extremely interesting to observe.
- Old World Temperament: Its speed and defensive posture provide a satisfying challenge for the most experienced keeper, serving as a testament to their skill.
- Systematic Novelty: The species was formally described only in 2015/2019 (previously as Phormingochilus carpenteri/kirki), making it an interesting acquisition for taxonomy enthusiasts.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
The key to safe keeping is understanding its defensive nature. It is a species intended exclusively for advanced experts.
- Venom: Potent and medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause severe, long-lasting systemic symptoms, including strong muscle cramps. It requires absolute respect and caution.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast spider. Its first reaction to a threat is flight, but when cornered, it will unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack. It can produce hissing sounds (stridulation).
- No Urticating Hairs: As an Old World tarantula, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is a powerful bite.
- Handling: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, in a secure environment, with utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Semi-Arboreal Sanctuary
The key is to provide it with the opportunity to live out its hybrid lifestyle. The terrarium must be vertically oriented (min. 30x30x40 cm for an adult) and possess excellent gravity ventilation.
A thick layer of substrate (minimum 8-10 cm) that holds moisture (coconut fiber, peat) is essential. Although it is an arboreal species, it often digs or builds its nest from the very bottom. A vertical decor element (large cork tube) is equally important, as it will serve as the main hide.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Rainforest
- Temperature: The optimal range is 25-28°C.
- Humidity: High, at 70-80%. It is best maintained by keeping the substrate moist and providing a water dish, while also ensuring excellent ventilation.
