Description
Hysterocrates gigas
In the heart of the humid rainforests of Cameroon lives a creature that defies typical definitions – Hysterocrates gigas. This species is the embodiment of wild and untamed nature. It is not only an impressively large (up to 20 cm leg span) and powerful Old World tarantula, but above all, a fascinating marvel of evolution, possessing the almost unheard-of ability to actively swim and hunt in an aquatic environment. Its secretive, subterranean lifestyle makes it a true "grail" for keepers seeking the ultimate challenge.
WARNING: Species exclusively for advanced experts. H. gigas possesses potent, potentially medically significant venom, moves with incredible speed, and exhibits a highly defensive temperament. It demands the highest level of experience, respect, and responsibility.
Why is Hysterocrates gigas an Exceptional Choice for the Expert?
- Semi-Aquatic Nature: The only known tarantula capable of actively swimming, diving (for up to 2 hours!), and hunting underwater. Creating a paludarium for it is the pinnacle of advanced terrarium keeping.
- Impressive Size: One of the largest African tarantulas, reaching up to 20 cm in leg span, with a massive, powerful build.
- Dynamic Coloration: A fascinating color change from velvety black after a molt to a rusty orange or brown before the next one.
- Master of Underground Engineering: An obligate burrowing species that creates deep and complex tunnel systems, which form the center of its world.
- Old World Temperament: Its speed and defensive posture provide a satisfying challenge for the most experienced keeper.
- Potential for Communal Keeping: Although risky and only for experts, it exhibits social behaviors that go beyond mere tolerance.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
The key to safe keeping is understanding its defensive nature and reaction sequence: flight (to its burrow or water) is the first option, and attack is the last resort.
- Venom: Potent and potentially medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause severe symptoms (intense pain, muscle cramps, swelling). It is not considered fatally dangerous to a healthy adult but requires absolute respect.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast spider. It does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is a powerful bite, preceded by a threat posture and stridulation (hissing).
- Handling: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, in a secure environment, with utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – An Underground Kingdom
Providing the ability to dig is crucial. The terrarium should offer ample vertical space. For an adult specimen, an enclosure of 35-75 liters with very deep substrate is recommended.
A thick layer of moisture-retaining substrate (a minimum of 20 cm for an adult) is essential (coconut fiber, peat, vermiculite). Deep substrate is fundamental to the spider's sense of security.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Rainforest
- Temperature: The optimal range is 21-28°C.
- Humidity: High, at 70-85%. This species does not tolerate dry conditions. The best method is to maintain a humidity gradient – the deeper layers of the substrate should be constantly moist (achieved by watering one corner or overflowing the water dish), while the surface can dry out slightly. Good ventilation is essential.
A Note on Hybridization
One should be aware that there is a problem with hybridization within the Hysterocrates genus in the hobby. We strive to offer specimens from the purest possible bloodlines, but a full genetic guarantee is sometimes difficult to obtain. Transparency on this matter is crucial to us.
