Description
Harpactira pulchripes – The Golden Jewel of Africa
In the world of terrarium keeping, there are species that become legends. Harpactira pulchripes undoubtedly belongs to this elite group. Considered by many to be the "crown jewel" of modern husbandry, this African tarantula mesmerizes with a hypnotic combination of the desert gold of its carapace and the metallic, almost electric blue of its legs. This is not just another spider – it is a living work of art, an invitation to commune with one of the most beautiful and fascinating invertebrates.
Why is Harpactira pulchripes an Exceptional Choice?
- Unmatched Beauty: The spectacular contrast between the warm, sandy gold of the carapace and the cool, metallic blue of the legs creates a color composition that is virtually unrivaled in the spider world.
- Surprisingly Calm Nature (for an Old World): Unlike many of its African cousins, H. pulchripes is a fundamentally skittish and defensive species, not an aggressive one. Its first reaction is to flee into its burrow. This makes it an ideal "introductory" species to the world of Old World tarantulas.
- Master of Underground Architecture: As a fossorial species, it actively digs deep burrows and creates extensive web structures at the entrance, which is fascinating to observe.
- "Displayable Digger": Despite its secretive nature, when provided with the right conditions (deep substrate!), it often spends time in view at the entrance of its burrow, making it an excellent observation subject.
- For the Conscious Keeper: Owning this species is a testament to experience and respect for the nature of Old World tarantulas.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
The key to safe keeping is understanding its defensive nature. This is a species intended for intermediate and experienced keepers.
- Venom: Potent and medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause unpleasant local symptoms (pain, swelling) and potentially systemic ones (muscle cramps). It is not considered fatally dangerous to a healthy adult but requires absolute respect.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is a very fast spider. Its first reaction to a threat is to flee into its burrow. Only when cornered will it assume a threat posture and may attack. It can produce hissing sounds (stridulation) as a warning.
- No Urticating Hairs: As an Old World tarantula, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is its bite.
- Handling: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, with utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – An Underground Kingdom
The ability to dig is crucial for this species. The terrarium should be vertically oriented (e.g., 20x20x30 cm or 30x30x30 cm for an adult) to accommodate a very deep layer of substrate.
A thick layer of substrate (an absolute minimum of 15-20 cm for an adult), e.g., a mix of coconut fiber, peat, and sand, is essential. Deep substrate is fundamental to the spider's sense of security and significantly mellows its temperament.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Dry Savanna
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-30°C during the day, with nighttime drops to 20-24°C.
- Humidity: Should be 60-70%. The best method is to keep the substrate dry and provide constant access to a water dish. Periodically, generously overflowing the water dish will hydrate the deeper layers of the substrate, creating a humidity gradient. Avoid misting the entire interior.
