Chilobrachys huahini – impressive tarantula from Thailand
Chilobrachys huahini is one of the largest representatives of its genus, originating from the Hua Hin province in Thailand. Adult females reach up to 10 cm in body length and over 18 cm in leg span. This species does not stand out with intense colors (a yellow-brown coloration predominates), but it attracts attention with its aggressive temperament and large size.
Keeping conditions
- Terrarium: minimum 30×30×30 cm for an adult female (slightly larger is better). A thick layer of substrate (e.g., coconut fiber) will allow it to dig a burrow.
- Decor: roots, cork tubes as hides and anchor points for webbing. Live plants are usually quickly destroyed.
- Temperature and humidity: characteristic of Asian tarantulas (approx. 28°C during the day, high humidity).
Behavior and feeding
- Aggression and venom: a highly venomous tarantula with an explosive temperament. A bite does not threaten a healthy adult but can be painful.
- Voracity: the spider readily hunts prey appropriate to its size, even large cockroaches.
Breeding
- Female: should be well-fed before mating (to minimize the risk of eating the male).
- Egg sac: usually contains 200–250 eggs; after approx. one month, first instar nymphs hatch.
Chilobrachys huahini is an excellent choice for more advanced keepers who are looking for a large, voracious tarantula from Asia with an aggressive disposition.
