Description
Brachypelma hamorii (Mexican Redknee) – An Icon of Terrarium Keeping
Brachypelma hamorii, commonly known as the Mexican Redknee tarantula, is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable and desired spiders in the world. Its "hobby icon" status, cemented by appearances in films like "Raiders of the Lost Ark," is no accident. This is a species that, thanks to its spectacular appearance, docile disposition, and exceptional hardiness, has become a true ambassador for the tarantula world and an ideal choice for a first spider.
Why is Brachypelma hamorii an Ideal Choice to Start?
- Unmatched Beauty: The striking contrast of the deep black body and the bright orange patches on the legs makes it one of the most beautiful tarantulas, adorning any collection.
- Legendary Calmness: Its docile and predictable disposition demystifies the world of spiders. It rarely shows aggression, preferring flight or flicking urticating hairs over confrontation.
- Exceptional Hardiness: This is a "forgiving" species that adapts perfectly to the conditions found in most homes, without requiring complicated and expensive equipment.
- A Companion for Decades: This is an investment in passion. Females are extremely long-lived, living 20-30 years. Observing the slow transformation from an inconspicuous sling to a majestic adult is a fascinating, multi-year journey.
- Ethical and Legal Choice: The species is protected by CITES (Appendix II). By purchasing an individual from our breeding program, you are assured of its legal origin and support the conservation of wild populations. Each purchase comes with a CITES document confirming legal origin.
Temperament and Safety – What You Need to Know
Understanding the behavior of B. hamorii is key to stress-free care. Its reputation as one of the calmest tarantulas is fully deserved.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. The effects of a potential bite, which occurs extremely rarely, are comparable to a bee sting.
- Urticating Hairs: This is the main defense mechanism. A disturbed spider flicks a cloud of microscopic hairs from its abdomen, which can cause itching and skin irritation. Contact with eyes and respiratory tract should be avoided.
- Defense Hierarchy: The spider always gives warnings. Its first reaction is flight. Then it flicks hairs. A threat posture and biting are the absolute last resort.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – A Horizontal Fortress
For a terrestrial species, the key rule is: the terrarium should be significantly wider than it is tall to minimize the risk of a fatal fall. For an adult specimen, the ideal dimensions are 30x30x25 cm. Good ventilation is essential.
The most important element is the substrate depth. A layer of coconut fiber or peat at least 10 cm deep should be provided (ideally, fill the terrarium halfway). This allows the spider to dig, which reduces stress, and also drastically shortens the potential fall distance.
Temperature and Humidity – Simplicity and Stability
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C. Standard room temperature will suffice in most homes.
- Humidity: This species prefers rather dry conditions (60-70%). The best method is to keep the substrate dry and provide constant access to a water dish. Periodically moistening one corner of the terrarium is fully sufficient. Avoid misting the entire interior.
Curiosity: The True Identity of the "Redknee"
For decades, the tarantula massively bred in the hobby was incorrectly identified as Brachypelma smithi. It wasn't until DNA studies in 2017 confirmed that the iconic "redknee" from our collections is, in fact, Brachypelma hamorii. The true B. smithi is a very similar species but lives on the other side of the Balsas River in Mexico, which acts as a natural geographical barrier for them.
