Description
Brachypelma emilia (Mexican Redleg) – The Painted Jewel of Mexico
Brachypelma emilia is a species that has held a prominent place in the hearts and collections of terrarium enthusiasts worldwide for decades. Regarded as a living icon of the hobby, it combines spectacular coloration, a docile temperament, and exceptional hardiness, making it an ideal choice for both individuals beginning their tarantula adventure and experienced collectors seeking a gem for their collection.
Why is Brachypelma emilia an Ideal Choice?
- Living Work of Art: Its most characteristic feature is a deep, black triangle on the light, beige-orange carapace. Combined with intensely red legs and a velvety black body, this creates an unforgettable, natural tattoo.
- Legendary Calmness: Renowned for its extremely calm, slow, and predictable disposition, making it one of the easiest to handle and safest tarantulas available on the market.
- Exceptional Hardiness: This is a "forgiving" species that adapts perfectly to the conditions found in most homes, without requiring complicated and expensive equipment.
- A Companion for Decades: This is an investment in passion. Females are extremely long-lived, living 20-30 years. Observing the slow transformation from an inconspicuous sling to a majestic adult is a fascinating, multi-year journey.
- Ethical and Legal Choice: The species is protected by CITES (Appendix II). By purchasing an individual from our breeding program, you are assured of its legal origin and support the conservation of wild populations. Each purchase comes with a CITES document confirming legal origin.
Temperament and Safety – What You Need to Know
Understanding the behavior of B. emilia is key to stress-free care. Its reputation as one of the calmest tarantulas is fully deserved.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. The effects of a potential bite, which occurs extremely rarely, are comparable to a bee sting.
- Urticating Hairs: This is the main defense mechanism. A disturbed spider flicks a cloud of microscopic hairs from its abdomen, which can cause itching and skin irritation. Contact with eyes and respiratory tract should be avoided.
- Defense Hierarchy: The spider always gives warnings. Its first reaction is flight. Then it flicks hairs. A threat posture and biting are the absolute last resort.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – A Horizontal Fortress
For a terrestrial species, the key rule is: the terrarium should be significantly wider than it is tall to minimize the risk of a fatal fall. For an adult specimen, the ideal dimensions are 30x30x20 cm. Good ventilation is essential.
The most important element is the substrate depth. A layer of coconut fiber or peat at least 10-15 cm deep should be provided. This allows the spider to dig, which reduces stress, and also drastically shortens the potential fall distance.
Temperature and Humidity – Simplicity and Stability
- Temperature: The optimal range is 22-28°C. Standard room temperature will suffice in most homes. Heating mats under the bottom of the terrarium should be avoided!
- Humidity: This species prefers rather dry conditions (50-70%). The best method is to keep the substrate dry and provide constant access to a water dish. Periodically moistening one corner of the terrarium is fully sufficient. Avoid misting the entire interior.
