Description
Avicularia purpurea (Ecuadorian Purple) – The Purple Jewel of the Amazon
Introducing a living jewel whose metallic sheen evokes the most precious amethysts – Avicularia purpurea. This elegant arboreal acrobat, known as the Ecuadorian Purple Tarantula, is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after and visually striking spiders in terrarium keeping. Its mesmerizing, iridescent coloration, combined with a generally docile disposition, makes it the crown jewel of any collection.
Why is Avicularia purpurea an Exceptional Choice?
- Unmatched Beauty: In the right light, its carapace and legs shimmer with an intense, metallic purple-blue iridescence. This is a so-called "structural color," which dynamically changes hue depending on the lighting.
- Master Weaver: It is one of the most prolific web-building species in its genus. In a short time, it can transform the terrarium into a dense network of silk tunnels and hammocks.
- Docile Yet Skittish Sprinter: Fundamentally, this is a species with a docile disposition that rarely shows aggression. However, it should be remembered that it is extremely fast and jumpy, and its first reaction to a threat is flight.
- "Delicate Species" Myth Debunked: For years, this species was considered difficult to keep. Today we know that the problems stemmed from incorrect husbandry practices. By providing the key element – excellent ventilation – this is a relatively easy spider to maintain.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete, Modern Guide
The key to success in keeping this species is moving away from outdated methods and understanding its natural environment – the windy tree canopies of Ecuador.
Vertical Terrarium
As an arboreal species, A. purpurea strictly requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended minimum dimensions are 20x20x40 cm. Choosing a front-opening or side-opening terrarium is crucial to avoid destroying the spider's web nest during every maintenance task.
Ventilation – Absolute Priority and Solving the "SADS" Riddle
The historical problem of "Sudden Avicularia Death Syndrome" (SADS) was not a mysterious disease, but the result of stagnant, humid, stuffy air. Therefore, excellent ventilation is the absolute most important condition for success in keeping. The best solution is cross-ventilation (vents on opposite walls), which ensures constant air circulation, mimicking natural, windy conditions.
Temperature and Humidity – A Modern Approach
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C. The species does perfectly well at standard room temperature.
- Humidity: Should be 70-85%. However, the way it is maintained is most important. Instead of keeping constantly wet, swampy substrate, provide a large, open water dish and lightly mist one wall of the terrarium every few days. The substrate should be allowed to dry out.
Temperament and Safety
This is a species with a docile disposition, but very skittish and fast. It possesses Type II urticating hairs, which it uses extremely rarely. Its unique defense mechanism is the ability to accurately shoot a stream of feces. Due to its tendency to jump, handling this species is strongly discouraged to avoid a potentially fatal fall for the spider.
