Description

The Vietnamese or Annam walking stick insect, scientifically known as Medauroidea extradentata, is a species of insect from the order Phasmatodea, native to Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam. It is a popular pet insect due to its interesting behavior and ease of care.

Appearance: They have slender, elongated bodies that resemble twigs. Their bodies are typically green or brown, which aids in camouflage. Adult individuals reach a length of 10 to 12 cm (3.94- 4.72”). A characteristic feature of this species is the two small protrusions on their heads that resemble horns.

Behavior: They are herbivorous insects, feeding mainly on blackberry, oak, raspberry, rose, and other plant leaves. Like many other stick insects, Annam walking sticks are nocturnal.

Reproduction: Females are usually larger than males. Vietnamese stick insects reproduce through parthenogenesis, meaning females can lay eggs without fertilization by a male. The eggs are small, oval, and have a hard shell, which helps protect them from predators.

Defense: When they feel threatened, they assume a position resembling a twig, making them harder to spot. Additionally, if touched or disturbed, they can play dead, which is also a defense mechanism against predators.
Care: Annam stick insects are easy to care for. They require a suitably sized terrarium with access to fresh leaves for food. Maintaining proper humidity in the terrarium and regularly misting the interior with water is important. Vietnamese stick insects are fascinating creatures that are excellent examples of environmental adaptation through camouflage. They are also great insects to observe, making them popular in both home and educational settings.
