Description
Predatory Mites (e.g., Hypoaspis miles) - Natural Pest Control in Terrariums
Predatory mites (such as Hypoaspis miles) are a reliable and natural way to get rid of unwanted guests in the terrarium, like parasitic mites and fungus gnat larvae. They are exceptionally effective and can completely eliminate pest populations. A significant advantage is their ability to survive for a long time without food, allowing them to act even against pests with long developmental cycles.
Specialization in Larvae Control
Their main specialty is hunting fly larvae (e.g., fungus gnats) before they can transform into adult, flying insects. Although they do not directly attack pupae or adults, eliminating the larvae effectively interrupts the pest's life cycle and limits its population.
Safety for Beneficial Organisms
Hypoaspis miles may occasionally try to hunt springtails, but due to the latter's agility, this rarely succeeds. Importantly, predatory mites pose no threat to larger terrarium inhabitants, such as tropical isopods. Even young isopods are usually too large to become targets for these beneficial mites.
