Description
Poecilotheria ornata (Fringed Ornamental) – The Ornate Beast of Sri Lanka
Poecilotheria ornata, also known as the Fringed Ornamental, is a true titan among arboreal tarantulas. As one of the largest representatives of its genus, reaching an impressive leg span of up to 25 cm (10 inches), it represents the crowning achievement of any advanced keeper's collection. Its name – "The Ornate Wild Beast" – perfectly captures its dual nature: mesmerizing, fractal patterns and a majestic appearance on one hand, and potent venom and an uncompromising temperament on the other.
WARNING: Species exclusively for advanced keepers. P. ornata is an Old World tarantula – it is extremely fast, highly defensive, and possesses potent, medically significant venom. It requires the highest level of experience, respect, and absolute adherence to safety protocols.
Why is Poecilotheria ornata a Connoisseur's Choice?
- A True Arboreal Giant: One of the largest arboreal tarantulas in the world. Its monumental size commands awe and respect.
- Spectacular Coloration: The adult female is a mosaic of gray, yellow, and a purple sheen. The underside of the legs features bright yellow warning colors, displayed during a threat posture.
- Fast Growth: Under optimal conditions, it can reach maturity in just 1.5-2 years, allowing the keeper to quickly enjoy its full size.
- Conservation Status (CITES): The species is protected (CITES Appendix II) and threatened in the wild (IUCN: Endangered). Owning a specimen from a legal breeding program is an active contribution to the species' conservation.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
The key to safe keeping is understanding its defensive nature. This is a species intended exclusively for advanced keepers.
- Venom: Potent and medically significant. A bite is very painful and can cause severe, long-lasting systemic symptoms, including severe muscle cramps, headaches, and nausea, potentially requiring hospitalization.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast ("lightning-fast") spider. Its primary strategy is to flee to its hideout, but when cornered, it will unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack.
- No Urticating Hairs: As an Old World tarantula, it does not possess urticating hairs. Its only weapon is a powerful bite.
- Handling: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter (12-inch) tweezers, in a secure environment, with utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Vertical Terrarium
As an arboreal species, P. ornata strictly requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended minimum dimensions are 30x30x45 cm. Excellent cross-ventilation is crucial to prevent air stagnation and mold growth in the humid environment.
An essential decor element is a vertical cork bark tube, which will mimic a natural tree hollow and serve as the main hide.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Rainforest
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C (75-82°F), with acceptable nighttime drops.
- Humidity: High, at 70-85%. It should be maintained by providing a deep layer (5-10 cm) of moist substrate (coconut fiber, peat) and a water dish.
Legal Status (CITES)
This species is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Convention. When purchasing one, you must receive a document from the seller confirming its legal origin (e.g., certificate of captive breeding). In Poland, there is no requirement to register spiders with the county office, however, possessing the aforementioned document is legally required.
