Description
This is one of the rarer assassin bug species in the hobby, belonging to the genus Platymeris (which also includes the popular Platymeris biguttatus, distinguished by its white spots and yellow leg banding).
Native to eastern and southern Africa.
They reach approximately 3-4 cm in length, featuring a prominent rostrum used to inject venom and digestive enzymes to subdue and feed on prey.
They possess potent venom (generally not life-threatening to a healthy human), though these insects strongly prefer retreating and hiding rather than displaying aggression.
They can reproduce both sexually and via parthenogenesis.
They show high temperature tolerance, with the optimal breeding range being 20-25°C (68-77°F).
They thrive in moderate humidity (around 40-60%), though providing a slight moisture gradient or lightly misting one side assists nymphs during molting.
It is essential to provide vertical pieces of cork bark positioned so that the insects can hang upside down during molts, along with secure mesh ventilation at the top of the enclosure.
They feed on all standard feeder insects, actively hunting roaches and crickets.
Interestingly, they can be kept communally and will even hunt in groups, offering fascinating observational value (ensure individuals are similarly sized to prevent cannibalism among smaller nymphs).
This species makes a rewarding, low-maintenance addition to any invertebrate collection.
