Description:
In Poland, there are many species from the genus Myrmica, and most breeders/sellers don't usually identify them accurately. Random species are often sold as Myrmica rubra. Myrmica ants are generally moisture-loving, highly polygynous (with even hundreds of queens), tend to cultivate aphids, lead a nomadic lifestyle (often changing nests), and have a strong sting. They are super aggressive. In Poland, they can be found everywhere - under stones, debris, logs, in wood, in old bottles, and sometimes I have even seen colonies living directly on the ground under a larger, living leaf, such as a common plantain.
- Species: Myrmica cf. rubra
- Difficulty: low
- Soldiers: none
- Size: queens 5-6mm, workers 3-5mm
- Coloration: shades of red, sometimes leaning towards black, sometimes more orange
- Distribution: most of Eurasia
- Feeding: honey water and feeder insects
- Hibernation: yes, around 4-8°C (39-46°F)
- Temperature: 22-26°C (72-79°F)
- Recommended formicarium: any with high humidity, but I would avoid acrylic ones as Myrmica ants tend to be messy.
