Description
Kochiana brunnipes – Brazil's Miniature Marvel
In the fascinating world of tarantulas, Kochiana brunnipes stands out as a captivating jewel on a micro-scale. Recognized as one of the smallest tarantulas in the world, this species offers enormous charm in a small package. Its velvety black body provides a dramatic backdrop for its contrasting, delicately pink legs. Despite its small size, it is characterized by a docile disposition, which, combined with its secretive, fossorial lifestyle, attracts keepers who value the opportunity to observe the discreet life of these extraordinary creatures.
Why is Kochiana brunnipes an Exceptional Choice?
- Subtle Elegance: The velvety black body contrasts beautifully with the delicately pink legs (from the knees down). An additional adornment is the golden "mirror" of urticating hairs on the abdomen.
- True Dwarf: One of the smallest tarantulas, reaching a maximum leg span of about 6 cm. Ideal for those with limited space.
- Docile Nature: This is a calm species, devoid of aggression, which very rarely assumes a defensive posture. Bites are practically unheard of.
- Master of Underground Architecture: As an obligate burrower, it spends most of its life in self-dug tunnels. Observing its activity at the burrow entrance is a reward for patience.
- Ideal "Second Tarantula": An excellent choice for the patient beginner or as the next step after mastering the care of a larger species. It teaches precision in caring for small specimens and the specifics of fossorial species.
Temperament and Safety – What You Need to Know
The temperament of K. brunnipes is a fascinating mix of calm and dynamism. It is docile, but at the same time very fast and skittish.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant.
- Urticating Hairs: It possesses golden urticating hairs on its abdomen ("mirror"), but uses them reluctantly, preferring to flee. They may cause mild itching.
- Speed and Skittishness: This is its main defensive trait. It reacts with a lightning-fast escape to its burrow at the slightest disturbance.
- Handling: Due to its small size and extreme speed, handling this species is categorically discouraged. All manipulations require the utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – An Underground Kingdom
The key is to provide it with the opportunity to fulfill its most important instinct: digging.
- Juveniles (L1-L5): Require small, secure containers (deli cups, sauce cups) filled with substrate at least 2/3 high.
- Adults: A small terrarium is sufficient (e.g., 15x15x15 cm or 20x20x20 cm). The substrate depth is more important than the floor space.
- Substrate: A thick layer of substrate (minimum 10 cm for an adult) that holds moisture (coconut fiber, peat) is essential. This allows the spider to dig a burrow and provides a sense of security.
- Ventilation: Good gravity ventilation is crucial with high humidity.
Temperature and Humidity – Simulating the Rainforest
- Temperature: The optimal range is 25-28°C. It tolerates room temperatures, but this slows down its growth.
- Humidity: High, at 70-80%. This species does not tolerate dry conditions well. It is best to maintain moisture in the substrate by regularly watering one corner of the terrarium.
- Hydration: A water dish is essential.
Feeding – A Challenge for the Smallest
This is a voracious species, but feeding the smallest specimens requires attention.
- Juveniles (L1-L3): Require very small food (springtails, D. melanogaster fruit flies, pre-killed pinhead crickets). It is best to offer pre-killed prey. Feed every 2-3 days.
- Subadults and Adults: Feed every 7 days with appropriately sized insects (crickets, cockroaches, mealworms).
