Description
Hapalopus formosus (Large Form / "Gross")
Hapalopus formosus is a species that captivates at first sight. This small tarantula is a true jewel from Colombia, combining energy, spectacular coloration, and fascinating behaviors. The "Gross" (Large) form we offer is distinguished by a significantly larger target size (up to 10-12 cm), making it even more desirable to collectors.
Why is Hapalopus formosus (Large Form) an Exceptional Choice?
- "Pumpkin Patch" Pattern from a Young Age: The spectacular coloration – a black abdomen with bright orange patches resembling pumpkins – is visible even in the smallest specimens.
- Impressive Size (Gross Form): It grows to a much larger size (up to 10-12 cm leg span) than other known dwarf species, making it more impressive.
- Very Fast Growth: Observing the dynamic changes from a tiny spiderling to a fully colored adult is extremely satisfying and occurs in a relatively short time.
- Active Web Architect: The species is known for intensive webbing ("heavy webber"). It creates complex, dense webs that are an ornament to the terrarium and a testament to its activity.
- Excellent Display Species: Despite its skittishness, it often stays in view, proudly displaying its beautiful colors. Ideal for people with limited space.
Temperament and Safety – Small Spider, Big Personality
H. formosus is characterized by a fascinating dichotomy: it is docile, but at the same time extremely skittish and fast.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. A bite is extremely unlikely.
- Urticating Hairs: It has urticating hairs but uses them very reluctantly, preferring to flee. They are less irritating than those of many other species.
- Speed and Skittishness: This is its main characteristic. It reacts with a lightning-fast escape to the slightest disturbance.
- Handling: Due to its small size and extreme speed, handling this species is categorically discouraged. All manipulations require the utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – Space for an Active Tenant
A small terrestrial terrarium (min. 20x20x20 cm) is sufficient for an adult specimen. Good ventilation is essential.
Adequate substrate depth is important (a minimum of 8 cm for adults, and for juveniles as much as 2/3 of the container's height), which allows for digging and provides a sense of security.
Temperature and Humidity – The Key to Success
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C. It tolerates room temperatures, but this slows down its growth.
- Humidity: High, at 70-80%. This species does not tolerate dry substrate well. The substrate should be regularly moistened (preferably using the "damp corner" technique) and a water dish provided.
Feeding – Insatiable Appetite
It is a voracious and "enthusiastic" hunter.
- Juveniles (L1/L2): Require very small food (D. melanogaster fruit flies, pinhead crickets, cut-up mealworms). Feed every 2-3 days.
- Subadults and Adults: Feed every 7-14 days with appropriately sized insects (crickets, cockroaches).
