Description
The World's Most Invasive Termites. These termites can devastate homes, ships, and entire forests. Unlike ants, a termite colony includes both a king and queen who regularly mate, as well as workers of both sexes, further divided into ordinary workers and soldiers. The workers are blind, relying on their keen sense of environmental vibrations. Soldiers cannot feed themselves and depend on the ordinary workers for nourishment. When alarmed, termites vibrate and move back and forth to alert the rest of the colony.
Termites' ability to digest cellulose stems from their symbiotic relationship with microorganisms living in their gut. Large colonies of this species can chew through not only the hardest wood but also plastic, metal, drywall, asphalt, and many other materials.
Now, some mind-blowing facts about their development and colony size: The queen of a mature colony has such an enormous abdomen that the rest of her body is barely visible. Each year, a colony can produce 70,000 winged males and females, future kings and queens. The queens of large colonies can reportedly lay up to 30,000 eggs per day, nearly a million eggs per month, although some sources claim only 2,000 eggs daily. Soldiers make up about 10% of the colony population. An adult colony consumes 400 grams (0.88 pounds) of wood daily, equating to 12 kg (26.46 pounds) per month. No place in the world has successfully eradicated this species once it has firmly established itself.
In Hawaii, they cause $100 million in damage annually, while in the USA, they are one of the worst pests, with damages estimated at around $1 billion per year.
These termites are primarily nocturnal and, according to most sources, do not leave their constructed wooden tunnels. However, some sources indicate that they can also roam freely, as long as they avoid sunlight. They can nest both underground and above ground.
