Description

Caribena laeta – Caribbean Jewel of Metamorphosis

In the world of tarantulas, where brightly colored species often dominate, Caribena laeta is an offering for connoisseurs who appreciate subtle elegance and fascinating biology. Its species name, laeta, meaning "joyful," perfectly captures the charm of this spider. Its journey begins in the form of a mesmerizing, metallic blue sling, only to later, like a butterfly, undergo a breathtaking metamorphosis into a majestic, adult form colored in brown and gold. It is a rarer species in the hobby than its famous cousin, making it a unique and extremely rewarding terrarium inhabitant.

Why is Caribena laeta an Exceptional Choice?

  • Unmatched Metamorphosis: Observing the transformation from a sapphire-blue sling to an elegant, brown-and-gold adult is one of the most satisfying experiences in terrarium keeping.
  • Master Web Architect: This is an arboreal species that builds beautiful, funnel-shaped web nests, which serve as an ornament in any well-arranged terrarium.
  • Docile Yet Skittish Sprinter: Fundamentally, this is a species with a docile disposition that rarely shows aggression. However, it should be remembered that it is extremely fast and jumpy, and its first reaction to a threat is flight.
  • "Delicate Species" Myth Debunked: For years, this species was considered difficult to keep. Today we know that the problems stemmed from incorrect husbandry practices. By providing the key element – excellent ventilation – this is a relatively simple spider to maintain.

Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete, Modern Guide

The key to success in keeping this species is moving away from outdated methods and understanding its natural environment – the windy tree canopies of the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, Cuba), and not, as some sources incorrectly state, Brazil.

Vertical Terrarium

As an arboreal species, C. laeta strictly requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended minimum dimensions are 20x20x30 cm. Choosing a front-opening or side-opening terrarium is crucial to avoid destroying the spider's web nest during every maintenance task.

Ventilation – Absolute Priority and Solving the "SADS" Riddle

The historical problem of "Sudden Avicularia Death Syndrome" (SADS) was not a mysterious disease, but the result of stagnant, humid, stuffy air. Therefore, excellent ventilation is the absolute most important condition for success in keeping. The best solution is cross-ventilation (vents on opposite walls), which ensures constant air circulation, mimicking natural, windy conditions.

Temperature and Humidity – A Modern Approach

  • Temperature: The optimal range is 22-26°C. The species does perfectly well at standard room temperature.
  • Humidity: Should be 70-80%. However, the way it is maintained is most important. Instead of keeping constantly wet, swampy substrate, provide a large, open water dish and lightly mist one wall of the terrarium every few days. The substrate should be allowed to dry out.

Temperament and Safety

This is a species with a docile disposition, but very skittish and fast. It possesses Type II urticating hairs which (as an exception) it can flick in the air. Its unique defense mechanism is the ability to accurately shoot a stream of feces. Due to its tendency to jump, handling this species is strongly discouraged to avoid a potentially fatal fall for the spider.
