Description
Aspinochilus rufus – The Jewel of Java
Aspinochilus rufus is a species that can be described as a "criminally underrated Old World arboreal tarantula." Its mesmerizing, rich red-brown coloration and unique "glowing red halo," created by feathery appendages on its legs, immediately catch the eye. It is a hardy, fast-growing tarantula with a strong appetite, whose observation and keeping provide a fascinating experience for the connoisseur. Its recent reclassification from the genus Phormingochilus to the new genus Aspinochilus, specially created for it, underscores its uniqueness in the world of arachnids.
Why is Aspinochilus rufus an Exceptional Choice?
- Unparalleled Beauty: Striking red-brown or peach coloration, enhanced by a distinctive "herringbone" pattern on the abdomen. The greatest adornment are the feathery appendages on the legs, creating a "glowing red halo" around the spider.
- Fascinating Lifestyle: Although adult specimens lead a typically arboreal lifestyle, juveniles exhibit semi-fossorial tendencies, digging burrows at the base of the decor. Observing this change in behavior as they mature is extremely rewarding.
- Old World Temperament: As a "feisty Old World tarantula," it is skittish, lightning-fast, and highly defensive. It poses a satisfying challenge for the experienced keeper.
- Support for Species Conservation: Its only known habitat on the Argopuro volcano in Java is severely threatened. By choosing a specimen from our captive breeding program (CB - Captive Bred), you actively contribute to the conservation of this species and reduce pressure on wild populations.
Temperament and Safety – Essential Knowledge
This must be emphasized strongly: Aspinochilus rufus is a species intended exclusively for experienced keepers. Its character is the quintessence of Old World tarantula traits.
- Venom: Potent and medically significant, considerably stronger than that of New World species.
- Speed and Defensiveness: This is an extremely fast spider. Its first reaction to a threat is flight, but when cornered, it will unhesitatingly assume a threat posture and attack.
- "No Touch" Rule: Handling this species is categorically discouraged. All activities within the terrarium must be performed using long, at least 30-centimeter tweezers, with utmost caution.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – Vertical Terrarium
As an arboreal species, A. rufus strictly requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the recommended dimensions are at least 20x20x40 cm (e.g., Exo Terra Mini Tall 30x30x45 cm). A vertical piece of cork tube is essential, as is a thick layer of substrate (10-15 cm), which will allow young specimens to dig and maintain high humidity.
Temperature and Humidity – Balance is Key to Success
- Temperature: The optimal range is 24-28°C.
- Humidity: High, at 70-80%. However, the balance between humidity and ventilation is most important. Its mountain origin suggests a need for good air circulation. The terrarium must have excellent cross-ventilation to prevent stagnation and mold growth.
