Description
Amazonius germani (Germani Tree Spider)
Discover Amazonius germani – a species that captivates keepers worldwide with its dazzling, almost peach-like coloration and breathtaking speed. It is the ideal choice for the intermediate hobbyist or someone looking to take the next step in terrarium keeping, getting to know a spider with a unique behavioral profile.
A Species Rediscovered: The History of the Name
By purchasing this spider, you acquire a living piece of terrarium history. For decades, this species was mistakenly known as Tapinauchenius gigas, and later Pseudoclamoris gigas. Only a fundamental scientific revision in 2022 established a new genus and the correct name for it – Amazonius germani. Possessing this knowledge allows you to correctly filter the vast amount of outdated information available online and demonstrates a conscious approach to keeping.
Morphological Profile: Spectacular Metamorphosis
One of the species' greatest visual assets is its incredible transformation throughout its life:
- Juveniles (L1): Drastically different from adults. They have a black carapace, an orange abdomen with a distinct pattern resembling tiger stripes, and orange legs with characteristic black "socks."
- Adults: Exhibit a uniform, bright yellow-orange or reddish-brown coloration that densely covers their body and legs, giving them a fluffy appearance.
The species exhibits clear sexual dimorphism. Females grow up to 6-7 cm in body length (leg span up to 16 cm) and live up to 18 years. Males are significantly smaller and more slender, and after their final molt, they lose their intense colors in favor of a matte gray and live only a few months.
Temperament and Behavior: "Old World" in the New World
The most important characteristic of A. germani is its extreme speed, described by keepers as the ability to "teleport." Despite this, its temperament is skittish and non-aggressive – the primary reaction to a threat is a lightning-fast escape. Importantly, it lacks urticating hairs, and its only form of active defense is a bite. The venom is widely considered weak and medically insignificant. This unique combination of traits (speed, lack of urticating hairs, weak venom) makes it an ideal "bridge species" for those aspiring to keep more demanding Old World spiders.
Complete Keeping Guide
Terrarium and Decor
As a strictly arboreal species, it requires a vertically oriented terrarium. For an adult specimen, the minimum dimensions are 20x20x35 cm. It is essential to provide vertical structures, such as cork bark tubes, which will serve as a hide and nest-building site.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: The optimal range is 22-28°C. It does well at room temperature.
- Humidity: Maintaining high humidity at 70-80% is crucial.
- Ventilation: This is an absolutely critical element! To prevent air stagnation and mold growth in the humid environment, the terrarium must have excellent cross-ventilation.
Feeding and Breeding
This is a spider with a good appetite and a fast growth rate. Juveniles are fed 2-3 times a week, adults less often. Food should consist of running insects, such as crickets and cockroaches. Breeding in captivity is considered relatively simple. After a successful mating, the female may lay an egg sac containing up to 150-200 eggs, and sometimes is capable of laying a second (so-called secondary) egg sac.
