Description
Davus pentaloris (Guatemalan Tiger Rump) – Jewel of Central America
Davus pentaloris, commonly known as the Guatemalan Tiger Rump, is one of the most recognizable and cherished species in the terrarium hobby. Its popularity is no accident – it is a spider that combines striking beauty, fascinating behavior, and relatively simple keeping requirements. It serves as a jewel in the crown of any collection, catching the eye of both beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike.
Its aesthetic is a visual masterpiece: a copper carapace, velvety black legs, and a fiery abdomen with a distinct, black pattern resembling tiger stripes. Importantly, D. pentaloris is beautiful at every stage of life – juveniles are miniature copies of the adults.
Why is Davus pentaloris an Exceptional Choice?
- "Tiger Stripes" from a Young Age: The spectacular, high-contrast coloration (copper carapace, black legs, orange abdomen with black stripes) is visible even in the smallest specimens.
- Docile Yet Dynamic Character: Fundamentally, this is a species with a docile disposition, not inclined to confrontation. At the same time, it is very fast and skittish, which makes observing its reactions extremely interesting.
- Active Web Architect: This is a species that produces a lot of webbing ("heavy webber"), readily webbing up its surroundings and creating cozy nests. Its terrarium is never boring.
- Compact Size: As a small/medium-sized tarantula (up to 12 cm leg span), it is an ideal choice for those with limited space.
- Ideal "Second Tarantula": An excellent choice for the ambitious beginner or as the next step after mastering the care of a slower species. It teaches respect for speed and moisture maintenance.
Temperament and Safety – What You Need to Know
The temperament of D. pentaloris is a fascinating mix of calm and dynamism.
- Venom: Considered weak and medically insignificant. The effects of a potential bite, which occurs extremely rarely, are comparable to a bee sting.
- Urticating Hairs: This is the main defense mechanism. A disturbed spider may flick a cloud of microscopic hairs (Type III) from its abdomen, which can cause itching and skin irritation.
- Defense Hierarchy: The spider always gives warnings. Its first reaction is a lightning-fast escape. Next, it may flick hairs. A threat posture and biting are the absolute last resort.
- Handling: Due to its high speed and skittishness, handling this species is categorically discouraged to avoid unnecessary stress and the risk of a fall, which can be fatal for the spider.
Keeping in a Terrarium – A Complete Guide
Terrarium – A Horizontal Space
For a terrestrial species, the key rule is: the terrarium should be significantly wider than it is tall. For an adult specimen, the ideal dimensions are 20x20x20 cm or 30x30x20 cm. Good ventilation is essential.
Adequate substrate depth (a minimum of 5-7 cm, and for juveniles, even half the container's height) is important, allowing them to dig, especially young specimens.
Temperature and Humidity – The Key to Success
- Temperature: The optimal range is 22-28°C. Standard room temperature will suffice in most homes.
- Humidity: This is the most important parameter. This species is sensitive to drying out. Humidity should be maintained at 65-80%, using the humidity gradient technique (regularly watering one corner of the terrarium, while allowing the rest of the substrate to dry out slightly). A water dish is essential.
Curiosity: The True Identity of the "Tiger"
For years, this species was incorrectly sold as Cyclosternum fasciatum. Modern science, however, has confirmed its placement in the genus Davus. The true D. pentaloris comes from Guatemala and Mexico, while the similar Davus fasciatus is found in Costa Rica.
